Ripping Guide

How to Rip Audio Files from Your Deep Mind CDs

Many customers prefer to play our audio files on their portable audio device such as an iPod, iPhone, or portable MP3 player. If you purchased a CD in the past (please note that we ceased offering the option of purchasing physical CDs on December 19, 2012), the audio files will first need to be ripped to your computer’s hard drive using audio ripping software. In order to capture the full dynamic range of Deep Mind audio products, please rip and convert using the highest quality settings available and use lossless audio codecs if possible.

For playback on your Apple iPod, iPhone, or iPad

iTunes can easily perform the task of ripping your CD so that the audio files can be played on your iPod. To do this, open iTunes and then insert the audio CD into your CD drive on your computer. iTunes should recognise it and ask whether you wish to import the tracks. There will be no online information available for the CD you import so you can skip the initial import step where iTunes tries to locate the disc and track titles. The tracks will be imported as track 01, track 02, etc. Import settings can be found under the Edit menu in iTunes. Select Preferences and click on the General tab. From here you can tell iTunes what you want it to do when an audio CD is inserted and also specify the encoder to use (which determines the type of resulting file) and the stereo bit rate (which determines the audio quality). To adjust these settings, click on the Import Settings button and then select the encoder type and quality setting. It is recommended that you use the Apple Lossless Encoder. Apple Lossless is not supported by the iPod shuffle and if you own this device use another encoder at the highest bit rate possible. You can find more information about iPod sound quality at:

For Playback on an your MP3 player

Windows Media Player can also easily rip files to MP3 format for play back on an MP3 player. To rip files with Windows Media Player, start the application and then insert the audio CD into your computer CD drive. Select the Rip CD button sitting on the toolbar at top and you are away. To adjust the rip settings, select the Rip Settings drop down box where you can select from a number of pre-set formats or select from here More Options where you will have greater control over the encoder used and the bit rate of the resulting file.

Under the Rip Music tab in the dialog box that appears, locate in the Rip settings section and choose the encoder from the drop down Format box. Next adjust the bit rate with the Audio quality slider, always moving it to the far right if it is moveable. If you rip to the MP3 format, it is suggested that you rip the files at the highest audio quality possible, which is 320 kbps for this file type.

Other formats for portable playback

With iTunes and Windows Media Player, you can also rip to lossless WAV (uncompressed) format, which is preferred if you purchase Deep Mind Pure Entrainment Pulse CDs and wish to digitally combine tracks.

Another format very worth mentioning is Free Lossless Audio Codec (FLAC). FLAC is a compressed format and therefore file sizes are smaller, however there is no loss in audio quality. There are not many portable audio players that can play FLAC files but they are excellent for archiving and converting to other file types An excellent and completely free application to rip to WAV, FLAC or MP3 (after also downloading a free MP3 codec) is Exact Audio Copy, which can be downloaded from:

Please note: Your license that comes with your purchase allows you to rip the files from your CD for your own use.
